it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday;

they said a trip could changed a person inside out. or at least, kennyboi said that. and i was so surprised at kennyboi's changes after he came back from hokkaido. little did i know, the summer camp i attended for 2 weeks totally changed me.

Ashinaga Summer Camp 2006 is a camp for orphans all around the world to gather together to talk about their experiences, encourage one another, rebuild their confidence and heal their pain. theres 19 countries involved in the 2006 camp - afghanistan, algeria, columbia, el salvador, india, indonesia, iran, malaysia, maudives, nigeria, pakistan, sri lanka, taiwan, thailand, turkey, uganda, USA.

i act as the translator from japanese to indonesian and vice versa for the kids, for everyday's basic conversation to meetings and annoucements. there's david and andry the twins, stephanie, wina, fira and maki with me, and eiko, keiko and sasaki joined in the middle.

we were in charged of the team Aceh - the most hit area of the tsunami 2004. it's crazy, we had like 44 people altogether, and 55 plus Yogya - which was affected by the Java earthquake which happened this May. it covered like 50% of the camp already seriously. hahas. our student volunteers were hitomi, yukari, aya, kanako, ishan, toshi, keita and daisuke.

1st August

i arrived at olympic youth center, 2 hours before the kids' arrival from the airport. we had a short meeting and we were just really excited to see the kids. the malaysia kids reached so we went to talk to them. ibrahim is THE cutest thing on earth i swear. he doesn't act like a 10 year old at all. we mingled around, making new friends with malaysia's translator - zulhairi, and just almost the rest who's there. it was fun. :D

2 and a half hour later, the kids arrived! hoho! a huge bus with lots of kids coming down. we didn't know what to do honestly. to help them carry their bag? or to hug them and say welcome? in the end, stephanie and i chose the smartest way - smile and wave like what a beauty queen would do. HAHAS. it was kinda awkard because we don't know who's who, and they seemed really tired after an 8 hour flight.

netherless, they were brought into the room and the whole room got filled up instantly. shiho [man i have ALOT to say about this] did a short briefting and after a short talk with the enbassador of indonesia, we bought the children to the cafeteria for lunch. they were brought back to their rooms afterwards as some of the kids had not arrived yet.

i fall in lurfe instantly with this boy. his name is edi iskandar and he is the CUTEST THING ON EARTH next to ethan. i was teasing him all along, callin him in a seductive sound, "kandarrrr~~" and he kept blushing. SO CUTE. i need to control myself before i found myself committin crime. hanzai shinai.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
look! he is a lil afraid of me.

i know i looked weird in there. prolly too excited to see kandar.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
LOOK AT HIS BLUSHY SMILE!!! *went crazy*

we were so tired but the translators were given a room all by ourselves so we were laughing madly behind. ishan invited me to take a shower with them and that's it. my first ever public bath experience. gone. just like that. HAHAS. it was kinda weird at first, eu see tonnes of girls naked, walkin around and acted like nothin is wrong... okay fine, maybe there's nothing wrong, but it's FRESH to me. shuddup. HAHAS. netherless it was a good experience. i spent the next 13 days all at public bath HAHAS.

we hanged out abit at block C - where the kids were sleepin at and took a few pictures.

ignore my messy hair.

had a short meeting with the indonesia team. keita kept calling me by my chinese name .___. knew more about them a lil and andry and i went to the vendin machine after it ended. the pakistan kids had just arrived. talked to them for awhile, and got to know sue and tera. david stole the cookies and we started eating *evil laugh at tera* and get back to our room and sleep.

2nd August

woke up at bloody 6.30am to move our stuffs to international building. went to block C to help the kids with their bedsheets and had a really great breakfast. the kids brought sambal [chilli sauce] and rendang. oh my god. it was effing nice i tell eu. the taste of home. HAHAS. so anyway, we brought the kids to this mini playhouse or whatever with lake in the middle and started takin tonnes of pictures.

eu wun believe my obsession towards him.

we then went to the hall for the grand opening ceremony. they introduced country by country and aceh had the largest amount of people hahas. the student volunteers danced to 'Shingo Mama' and it amused all of us right there. it was so funny and the kids lurfe it.

someone pushed me. >[

after some performances, the kids were asked to draw on how they felt when they lost their parents. i cried for awhile when i saw them writing, "i miss my mum and dad" and stuffs like that. shuddup, eu guys know imma emotional.

and yet kanako never fails to make people laugh with her stupid poses.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

had a buffet lunch after the opening ceremony ended, and imma TOTALLY in lurfe with the cream puff. i ate like, 5 of it and i even told daisuke to steal some for me. it was THAT nice honestly. daisuke can be the witness!

after lunch, we took a bus for a 2 and a half hour ride to yamanakako ;D took quite a bit of retarded pictures durin the bus ride.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
stefanie and i. we were shocked about something. HAHAS.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
daisuke aka daikirai aka ishii chan aka mr batu. the best retarded face partner besides andry.

slept abit durin the bus ride as we were hella tired. did translation even though we weren't 100% awake. it was that bad. hahas. had translators meeting at night and went to public bath with kanako. open-air hot spring. eat euur heart out guys. >D

gossiped with andry and david at the lobby and got to know toru. he's so cute honestly. and musan. musan musan. there's NO party without him i tell eu. he will be be at ANYWHERE as long as there's crowd. hahas. i sort of became his wife without knowing how and why. don't ask me. hahas.

i share a room with steffie, kak fira, maki, hitomi, aya, ishan and yukari. it was a really huge room so we just laid on the futon and fall asleep to get ready for the meeting with the 300 universities students at yamanakako tomorrow.

3rd August

had breakfast and they served chocolate cakes! :DD keita stole like, 5 chocolate cakes for me after i finished 5, and i ate 10 chocolate cakes in total.T_____T blame keita for my fatness. hahas.

we then walked all the way to yamanakako and it was effing hot. the sun was this close of burnin me. we arrived there with 300 students greetin us with the infamous 'checki' - which was the theme of the camp. i almost felt like a superstar walking on a red carpet hahas. i was in group 2, and fahdal, husnul, hyudi and dara were with me.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
the butterfly that landed on hitomi's cap while we were walkin.

we played this game where we gotta remembered all the members name and a-e-i-o-u. after a brief volleyball game and picnic lunch, we walked all the way to the lake and come back and fro just to play a hit-the-watermelon game. it was EFFIN hot and we were walkin under the sun like some mofos without water walking on the desert. the kids were so tired but for the sake of watermelons, we kept walkin and finally we went back to the yamanakako - under the aircon.

took a few pictures while we were at the lake.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
what did eu say about my eyes?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
stop forcin. euur eyes are small. shuddup already.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
eu bully me~

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
dara >D

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
the small and big eyes. how come i look weird in there. he put a curse on me.

oh, it's keita's cap by the way. i kinapped it in the mornin before we went to yamanakako. hahas. thanks monkey :))

the kids were asked to write their wishes on a piece of paper and fold a swan origami. the watermelons were served after that and MAN, it taste as good as heaven. imma not kiddin. and while imma eatin, i discovered this REALLLLLLLLLLY cute guy. more details later. hahas.

dara kept calling yuki 'chicai mei' which stands for small eyes, and its so funny to see his reactions everytime dara sings the chicai mei song. dara also called jyunpei 'megane' cause he's wearin a spectacle, and i really had alot of fun watchin and quarelling with yuki.

after resting, the camp fire was held and it was SO MUCH fun. we learnt the japanese bon odori and it was so funny. honestly T_T each country then started performin and when there's a song, musan or kazuki would started dancin wildly and in the end, everyone went forward to the stage and danced together like some crazy party. it was so fun and so funny, everyone was just dancin madly and havin fun. and then the aceh boys and girls performed their aceh dance and it was SO SO SO SO good. marvellous wonderful performance. imma so proud of them. the whole crowd just went wild at their beats.

had fun dancin to 'Shingo Mama' again as the kids learnt the steps from us. it was a tiring night, but definitely one of the funniest and best night out of the camp.

we then went back and had meeting again, this time with richard joinin us. we were reminded of tomorrow's program - sharing of own experience and went to bath after that. all i know was that i fall asleep after makin david taught me some vocabs and a few snacks with andry and co.

trust me, it's NOT easy to be a translator. what i expected was the normal conversations translations. what i did not expected is the amount of translations we had to do.

4th August

woke up and again, we walked all the way to yamanakako after breakfast under the really cruel sun. this is the day where orphans would have to share about their experiences on losing their loved ones and to be honestly speakin, i wasn't prepared. i kept praying to God for him to lead me due to my really limit vocabs and my emotional-ness.

we were divided into our groups again and after quarreling with yuki [yet again] about the size of his eyes, we went to this hall and a japanese student started to talk about how she lost her dad and how she overcame that dark period of her life and become the person she is today. goldliver from uganda went up next and talked about how AIDS took his dad away and how her family survived with leftover foods and everythin else. i was honestly speakin, translatin with sparks of tears in my eyes. oh my god so loser .-.

so then, each group went to seperate little rooms for the sharing time. the room was covered with futon and pillows to make people as comfortable as can be. i kept tellin mo that i'm definitely goin to cry hahas.

husnul and fadhal were not ready to share their stories and they can't even bear to listen to others so they went out first. the translators and student volunteers stayed behind the circle they formed and the sharin started. one of the guy started by sayin his story, and then the next one, and then the next one. all of them lost their parent either due to sickness or commit suicide. i was cryin and kept blowin my nose while translating. it was so hard for me. aish.

its finally walhyudi's turn and he took a deep breath and said his story.

"i was at school the day when tsunami hit our town, and i quickly ran home after i'd heard the news. i'd tried searchin for my dad but to no avail. it was my neighbour who informed me about my dad's death. i really hate myself for not stayin at home with him so that we could be together. now that he's gone, i wanna be a successful person to make him proud. i'd never known that there are others, like me, who lost their parents due to alot of reasons, and i'd found my mental pillars. thank you."

he broke down in the middle and paused for a few seconds and i, too, hafta take a deep breath before continueing my translation. it was so hard and honestly, my face was smurged with tears and water and nosewater and what's not. if someone took a video of that scene, imma never going out of my house ever again. T_T

dara spoke next and i SO wanna applause her courage.

"i lost my mum due to the tsunami on 26 december. i was at school at that time and so i'm safe. i ran all the way back ASAP when i heard about the tsunami but i couldn't found my mum. it was only after a few days later when her body was washed on shores. her body was beyond distinguish due to the water and stuffs [eu know how corpse looked bloated after soakin in water for too long]. we wanted to carry her body to the mosque but no one wanted to help [due to the stench and the horredous corpse]. in the end, we hafta carried her by shoulder and walked all the way. i won't cry cause i'd promise to my mum, who is in heaven now i believe, that i will be strong and i will never cry."

i was so awed by her courage and her determination. mo was fantastic though, he managed to translate everythin to the thai children WITHOUT droppin a tear. sugoi na. we had a break in the middle and dana and walhyudi decided that it was too much for them to listen on so they went out. being the melodramatic-fan me, i stayed behind, sittin behind the thai children who refused to share their stories and beside yuki and listened on.

there's this guy who tried to commit suicide when his father died. before he jumped off from his school, he saw his dad's face. at this point, mo and kazuki shoved this huge tissue box infront of me. hahas. he then talked about how he had no friends back at school because they teased him as the 'fatherless child' and how happy he was when he first make a friend in highschool. his story was touchin in some way, and inspiring in another.

yuki talked about how illness took his dad away and he broke down really badly when he recalled the day he saw his father's eye closed forever. i patted his back back and fro and gave him a squeeze. it was so different to see him breakin down like this when all we do was quarrel and makin fun of each other. aw.

one of the thai children, na, finally shared her story to others. she'd never mentioned her own experience to anyone, even her close friends, and she decided to share it today. god. so melodramatic.

to my surprise, walhyudi came back and listened on. i couldn't help beamin with proud. that guy has somethin in him. i knew it. >)

after we had done with the emotional stuffs, we just sorta lay around the futon and just chillin out, gossipin and tryin to get their wound heal. it was sad that mo hafta leave early cause he's just so funny.

we went down for to the hall and the aceh guys were teachin the japanese students the aceh traditional dance. hilarious i tell eu.

took group pictures in front of the headquarter after dinner, and we exchanged messages we wrote on our bands. i'd got natsu's. the camp fire was held after that and it was SO MUCH fun.

opening of campfire.

campfire.

the yamanakako's peeps had a fantastic drum performance, and there's 3 children who went up front and talked about their changes after they'd participated in this camp. i got emotional and cried again, lying on hana's shoulder. oh my god. imma such loser honestly. the music blasted on after the sharin ended, for a change of mood i believe, and we had a crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy time dancin like mad people together around the campfire.

it was like, out of a sudden, natsu grabbed my hand and that's it, we went to the middle of the circle and just started dancin besides people whom we don't know. it was like a rock concert cum crazy foam party. sweet. they encored the bon odori and it was really funny. too bad andry didn't took a video of the mad dancin session hahas. just before we thought that dancin was over, they blasted 'Shingo Mama' and being the ultimate Shingo Mama fans we were, we went up front again and danced around the campfire.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
go kandar go!

it was yet another uber tiring night, but DEFINITELY the best campfires that i'd been.

we bid goodbye to the students at yamanakako, and after exchangin numbers and emails, we walked back to our hotel.

all the 300 students at yamanakako, especially the greeennnn team, thanks loaddds ;D

had translators meetin at night and we were dead tired, not because of the mad amount of translations we'd done, but the amount of tears we'd cried. okay fine, i'd cried. ahem. after a comfortable nice warm bath at the open-air hotspring with aheeya and the thai children, with occasional water splashin from the algeria kids, i went up and had popmee with yukari.

we were eatin by the hallway and daisuke stalked us. talked for awhile before he escaped to the nearby convinience store [he used the back alley by the way, cause our curfew was at 12am HAHAS] while me and yukari stayed behind and talked. we talked about so much stuffs, like my life experiences, hers, her boyfriend, my view on relationships and stuffs like that. we slept really late that night, but that night was probably one of the most fulfilling nights ever in my life.

and btw, thanks aya for finishin my homework ;D heart heart.

5th August

it's back to tokyo time baby. keita did the remainin of my homework [tsktsk] and after a quick nap and a few pictures, again, we were back in tokyo - ueno zoo. the entrance ticket was free - courtesy of the ueno zoo.

we moved in groups under hitomi and keita and had fun watchin all the animals. we met a couple of keita's family members - the orang utans and the monkeys, and he himself waved at the animals, introducin which is his cousin and which is his brother. hahas.

chiristina aguilera flashed through my mind for one second.

had fried chicken for lunch and i had fun chasin the pigeons around. keita commented that i'm kiddy and i retorted back that imma only 17 - which makes me still a legal child. fine, 2 more months and my 'child age' is officially over but who cares. hahas.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
the indo team. i dunno where i was.

went back to the house and went to our new home for 3 days - university seminar house. it was located at hachioji, which is somewhere REALLY countryside for the tokyo-ers. netherless, the air was good, if that counts.

stef, kak fira and i were appointed to the worst room ever at the international buildin. it was not international-orientated AT ALL. we hafta climb mountain before we could reached the room and the room was smelly beyond words. it was like, no one had been inside for 2 years. there's all kids of insects on the wall and it was just horrendous.

we went to complain to shiho and after a few discussions, they gave us a place at the seminar hall, which supposedly had 20 people sleepin together. we don't mind at all, as long as we could get out of that hideous place, anywhere is heaven for us. it was that bad. david helped us moved our stuffs. then, we had translators meetin at night.

it was one of the most meaningful meetings ever, askin us on our feedbacks about yamanakako and how we felt as translators and stuffs. alot of ideas were exchanged and after the meetin ended, the indonesia team stayed behind to plan for the activities on free day and andry caught this on camera. shit eu andry shit eu.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
i was wavin my hands wildly in the air. T_T

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
gemuk, shinta and david. notice how david appears in every single picture?

went to bath at the kids' room and after spendin a quality time with stef, squeezin pimples and playin gameboys at the toilet [HAHAS], we went out and sat on the outside, chillin with lizar and co. who can't fall asleep. they played with my ds lite for abit before we threatened them to sleep. we hanged out for abit before goin back to sleep - and saw that there was only a total of perhaps 8 who were sleepin that room. okayyy. i was sniffin my heads off due to the blanket and the carpet, and shinta and kak fira kept laughin about my runnynose. i was blowin it profusely and i pitied the student volunteers who had to put up with it for the whole night. muahahaha. *kennyboi's evil laughter*

6th August

woke up after a horrid night of dust and whatsnot without knowin today would the busiest day ever for me throughout the whole camp. x.X

the kids were seperated into different workshops after breakfast and our first workshop was makin the bamboo flyin somethin. eu know, that thing that doraemon stick on its head? still clueless? this one eu mofo.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

it was kinda fun, makin it and playin with it with daisuke. he taught me the correct way of playin so mine could fly further and higher. he make me mine, or dedi, i forgot HAHAS. but thanks anyway, its so preeeetayyy. xD

the guys and daisuke went to play football afterwards and the girls went to do origami. had fun foldin all the weird stuffs out. the camera man is in lurfe with dwi and miki i swear. he requested for an interview and i was interpretin, tryin to hide my face from the camera at the same time hahas.

had lunch and my busiest period came. i was supposed to be in hitomi's group, and husna was missin so i hafta run all the way to the seminar house to find her, and was notified that aan was sick, so i gotta went downstair, searched for daisuke and asked stephanie to bring husna to international buildin first.

daisuke found the medical staffs and i hafta brought them upstairs because guys are not allowed in muslim girls' room. after some orders from the medical team, aan rest for abit while i went downstairs and switched with stephanie and became the translator for daisuke's group.

we were makin fan and i am proud to say mine is the prettiest!!! daisuke and keita said so :P daisuke's had this big 'FREEDOM' written behind. HAHA. that no-creative guy. make shiho's birthday card in secret and we panicked like crazy when shiho came into the room. daisuke was tryin all sort of ways to make her go away while i do some magic onto the card. it turned out bloody fantastic. oh well, the creative picasso me. *sighs*

helped novi stalked this guy of her dream and finally we went down to the field for sports festival. to my horror, hitomi and stephanie were not there and i was forced to be 3 people at one time, runnin in between my original group and daisuke's group. it was crazy, the sand at the field make me cough non stop and i almost vomitted. they were pretty worried but i assured that i am okay. i lost like, 40% of my voice though.

wave euur fans in the air i say!

had a relay game and i was partnered with mayumi. we were runnin with a ball behind our back. hilarious but super fun hahas. went for dinner with 200% of energy gone, and had translators meetin again at night. talked about tomorrow's activities and the division of 3 groups to different parts of japan, the next next day. thank god we were given a new room and it was like, MUCH MUCH better than the room we were supposed to have at international buildin. a personal toilet with bloody automatic toilet seat and bathtub system!!! what more can eu ask for? whoolala.

took a nice warm bath and went down to prepare to give shiho a surprise birthday celebration. daisuke and hitomi tricked her into comin over to the sakura buildin when the kids came out, singin the birthday song with ajral playin the guitar. shiho was moved to tears when presents were handed to her one by one. she speeched for awhile and after some pictures-takin, she went back and i stayed behind while the kids were ordered to go to sleep.

7th August

we were finally set free from the endless hotels and countryside - its tokyo's sightseeing day! whoohoo. i was in shanshan and aya's group and we moved the fastest. got to the station and helped toru and his nigeria's team to get on to the train on time. thank me toru, NOW. hahas.

had 32942054 train transfer before we finally reached asakusa - one of the oldest and history-rich area of tokyo. had mcdonalds and shopped at daiso - 100yen store. the kids bought like a kezillion stuffs from there and i picked up presents for the student volunteers along the way. we then walked to kaminarimon for pictures, and more pictures. i saw this keychain which has this traditional character that look ABSOLUTELY like daisuke, so i bought that for him. oh my god, its 100% him i swear. bought an elephanant for kanako, a puppy for hitomi, a really huge dog for toshi, a monkey for keita [not surprisin huh!], a teddy bear for yukari, a finger puppet for aya and tiny bear for shanshan.

we bought ice-cream and it tasted effin good under the hot sun. had endless train exchanges before we finally reached meguro for our next destination - the tokyo indonesia boardin school.

it was crazy, we needed to transfer by at least 3 different lines before we reached, and the kids were like, "huh? transfer again?" when we reached meguro. poor them. the walk towards the international school was HORRIBLE. we were all dying of fatigue, and we were silently cursing at the distance. after much turns and twists, we FINALLY saw a few boys in indonesian school uniforms before we went, that's the place! that's definitely the place! GOGO~!

it was like heaven when we finally reached the school. wasted no time at all to take in the aircon at the hall while the kids cooled themselves down and prepared for their performance later.

other teams reached slowly, and everyone was totally out of breath. mingled around before the program started, and DAMN KANDAR LOOKED SO CUTE IN THE YOGYA TRADITIONAL SHIRT. i was OMG-ing all the time, sitting besides andry, and dwi on top of my lap.

the school performed first, then our boys and girls with their aceh dance. it awed everyone who was watching, and they had this special performance with the kids from yogya. ajral strummed the guitar while they sang a popular indonesian song, and ALL of us were cramping near the stage, trying to get the best angle, with most of the people shouting, "kandar! look here! HERE!!!" he was a total superstar.

the music changed suddenly to the camp's theme song, どもたちになるために, and everyone clapped in surprise. out of nowwhere, someone just suddenly pulled me up the stage while i was videoing halfway. it was mad fun, singing on the stage with the kids while the rest clapped along with the music. almost everyone involved in the camp was up on the stage.

after the performance ended, the embassador gave each and every kid a backpack with clothes inside, and 30000yen each. we were like so damn jealous of the kids, and kept teasing to one another like, "hey, nothing for the staffs? xD" the malaysia kids got it too, as it's not really nice to let them going back with nothing when all the indo kids received something right?

after everything ended, we moved down to the cafeteria and OH MY GOD. the most delicious rendang, ikan bilis, kuey abon, EVERYTHING, was lying infront of us. we were squealing in mad excitement, and started rapping every single food we could lay our hands on.

it was SO good, we all at least had 3 servings. after chatting and mingling around, it was time to head back to the hotel, and to our horror secret wish, they make us takeaway all the unfinished food! it was crazy, all the staffs were stuffing everything they could into the bento boxes, showing the rest the true singaporean kiasu spirit.

we went back by bus, and most of the staffs fall asleep during the ride, including me. it was just so mother effing tired, and thank god there wasn't any translators meeting that night.

bathed, mingled around and we all went to sleep after the long tired day.

6th August

woke up and we moved down to the ashinaga rainbow house after breakfast. it is a house built for students who lost their parents and have nowhere to live. and i tell eu, that place is the bomb. it was crazy mother effing huge, and we were brought around the whole house and saw their facilities. it was crazy good.

we had a translators meeting while the kids and student volunteers were having mess fun at the living room. they were dancing around with the music, playing with balls of all kinds of shape and just, everything. i was so jealous, because andry actually skipped the meeting and went ahead and played with the kids!!! *#(&@*(#&@# *mumbles*

had lunch and after playing some heavy sports with keita wrestling me and carried me off from his shoulder, we settled down for the 2nd program - which was a talk given by ritah and on her life to japan. it was to encourage the kids to study hard and they might have chance to study in japan like her. we then watched the last year's DVD and the kids were asked to write an essay on how they felt when they lost their parents, how did they overcame it and what do they wanna be in the future.

the staffs just hanged around, giving them space and chit chatting at the back.
